Design Concepts


Starting with S12, the following major changes are planned:

  • Warlords level up by individual XP and not with Soul Energy (no holding back, more interesting decision to keep on using old Warlords or change to new ones)
  • Unit upgrades with Soul Energy (a new area to invest Soul Energy in)
  • Costs of upgrading items will depend on tier (better balancing)
  • Soul Forge will not produce Soul Energy but instead, give a bonus to XP and Soul Energy gained in fights (more PVP)


Warlord Upgrades

Warlords will get XP when they lead their units into battle. Each Warlord starts with level 1 and 0 Skill points. With each additional level, the Warlords get an additional Skill point that can be invested.


Each skill can be upgraded up to 5 times. The possible max-level of a skill depends on the Warlord level (Not to be confused with the player-level).

Warlord Level-Up by Warlord XP

  • The XP points an individual Warlord gets in his individual fight, level him up (bonus XP apply - e.g. by items or Academy apply)
  • Each Warlord can be upgraded once they level up
  • Higher Warlords & levels need more XP to level up further.
  • The current view on War Runes will be replaced by the Warlord-Level/Skills screen.
  • Each unlocked Warlord will have an additional XP bar & level shown in the Warlord Overview

Unit Upgrades

The fighting strength of Units will now be upgradable.

  • Each unit can be upgraded with Soul Energy up to 10 times
  • Each unit upgrade increases the fighting strength of a unit by X → defined by unit
  • The upgrades are called “research”, can be done in the Academy, and are very expensive - especially on higher levels.

A research also takes a lot of time, but the research times will be lowered when upgrading the Academy.

Additional changes to buildings

  • The Academy will no longer be the building giving a bonus to XP gain, but instead, it will be used for unit research.
  • Soul Forge does not generate Soul Energy anymore, but instead gives a bonus on Soul Energy and XP gain
  • New building unlocks:
    • 2nd Grain Mill unlocked at Citadel level 12 → 11
    • 2nd Stable unlocked at Citadel level 12 → 13
    • Soul Forge unlocked at Citadel level 13 → 8
    • Academy unlocked at Citadel level 8 → 12
  • Upgrading the Academy will also speed up research.

Costs of item upgrades will be based on item tier & rarity:

  • Love the idea of making old WLs more useful later in the game! The research times for units sime quite long but I am very interested to see how this unfolds in the actual game.

    I'm pretty excited as well to see how this changes the game. Do you already have a Warlord or unit in mind you'd definitely be leveling up?

  • As for leveling up heroes wouldn't be better to add more possibilities to differentiate heroes -- as of now we would see many players having for example trankard lvl 10 and skills added almost in the same manner. So i think it would be better if max skill level was raised to 8 for each skill and those requirements for higher level skills were removed maybe also add slot power or even more skills like fs or less damage to units.

    For me Bombur and one of the 3xInfantry WLs would be one candiate. When the systems is released I will evaluate closer ^^ Pretty excited as well! Thanks for the Dev-Talk heads up.
