Ever wondered how a game like Arkheim - Realms at War is made? What is the journey of an idea before it makes it to the game? How are bugs being fixed? Who creates the beautiful images? How do we keep players entertained? And - who are the human beings behind this project? The Arkheim - Realms at War Team invites you to take a peek behind the scenes. Today we want you to meet Game Writer Sam!
Discord name: DistantWorlds
Hi Sam. First of all, tell us something about yourself. What is your background, and how did you end up in Travian Games?
Well, I can't start the day right without a coffee, and I had my coffee this morning.
As a writer for Travian Games, my background is in Journalism, specifically multimedia Journalism. Before moving to Munich, I worked in various studios across London for many years, before teaching undergraduate Journalists what it takes to make good Journalism content! (thanks, LJ) Now moved to Munich, I worked in the Esports industry for a time, creating many content forms before joining Travian Games.
What are your main activities in the team, and how do you contribute to Arkheim - Realms at War during the Early Access stage?
Word wrangling! You see all those brilliant game mechanics the game devs create for Arkheim? None would function well if you didn't understand how to use them properly or read them properly. I ensure that the developers hard work and passion allow them to find the words they're looking for. Think of it as a cherry on top of an already sweet cake. Short story writing, naming Warlords, text updates, and better descriptions are just a few things I also work on. See those shiny new Eternal Anvil names? That was me, and the name change, too. I added a small easter egg in the naming of those. I'm surprised no one has got it yet! Outside of the game, I support the social media channels and Arkheim forums from a writing perspective. This means checking correct grammar before posts are up, suggesting alternative rewrites. Words, words, words.
What value can storytelling add to Arkheim?
In short, a great deal. In general, storytelling adds an incredible amount of value, something I'd like to explore in more detail as time goes on. In the world of Arkheim, things aren't there for the sake of being there. They are there for a reason. Storytelling does an incredible amount. It sets the context, gives a reason, and, more importantly, gives life to an otherwise incredible game.
What's your take on the humorous and ironic text content sprinkled all around Arkheim?
Brilliant! And I plan to continue it. The previous writer, Nik, did a monumental amount of writing in the world of Arkheim. He shaped how things are the way they are today, bringing to life so many different areas, especially from a narrative and written perspective.
I have a lot of respect for the work and passion Nik put into Arkheim and will see it is not wasted, especially considering just how dedicated players are to Arkheim.
How about work-life-balance? Do you play any games outside of work, or do you prefer other kinds of activities?
While I say I balance work-life well, I can't deny that work follows me wherever I go. I'm constantly writing, thinking of new ideas, scrapping old ones, reading books, learning more, revising my work, discovering more. Balance is also established with a good coffee.
I play a wide range of video games, from console to PC, with many favorites. Spare time I love to read fantasy/sci-fi books, play the piano, bouldering, and have a hobby in watchmaking. I'm usually quite involved in an amateur theatre Shakespeare group in Munich, mainly around poster designing/graphic design. Who knows, I might dip my metaphorical toe in the water of acting sometime in the future.
And lastly, do you have a message for our readers out there?
No story nor a written work is truly complete without feedback, and I live for it. It's so important. I urge you to approach the community managers or me to see stories developed, or anything else writing-related! Thanks for being so passionate about Arkheim.
On a personal note, thank you so much to the helpful community, especially the Evil Kingdom during S4! You have all been so helpful toward a new player.
