Meet Holger - Arkheim's Game Director

Ever wondered how a game like Arkheim - Realms at War is made? What is the journey of an idea before it makes it to the game? How are bugs being fixed? Who creates the beautiful images? How do we keep players entertained? And - who are the human beings behind this project? The Arkheim - Realms at War Team invites you to take a peek behind the scenes. Today we want you to meet Game Director Holger!

Discord name: Sarge

Hi Holger. First of all, tell us something about yourself. What is your background and how did you end up in the Arkheim Team?

Computers and computer games have always been my passion. Playing single player games was fun, but in my youth I discovered the joy of multiplayer games. Sadly, in those days, the setups of our LAN parties were often not working, so I needed to get deeper into networking to be able to play together with my friends. Soon playing in even the bigger LAN party matches was not enough. Luckily the first internet flat rates were available in Germany 😊.

After our last year of school I started to study computer science and Gerhard (alias KEEN) started to program Travian: Legends. For that he asked me to help him with the server stuff. After having our first success with Travian we founded the Travian Games GmbH together with his brother. Back then I was responsible for the system administration, or simply: keeping the game online.

Later I switched my focus more to development, for example working side-by-side with Markus (RedMax) on Travian: Kingdoms and now I'm responsible as Game-Director for Arkheim - Realms at War.

How would you describe your role in the Arkheim Team?

My job is to establish and promote the vision of the game and align with the experts of the different fields like for example Dario (Game Design), Markus (Dev), Simon (Art), Andrej (CCM) or Nicolas (Brand Marketing) to make sure everyone in the project is heading into the same direction.

Where do you see Arkheim - Realms at War going in the future? Any exciting features that we can look forward to?

With your help we have already improved a lot of the core of the game over the last rounds. I think we’ve found a solid base, but we’ll never stop improving the game. Our list of ideas is very long. Starting from things you can expect quite soon like Retreat and Defeat, Rare Supplies and improvements to the Endgame, to things that are currently still in an ideas phase like a War system, more options for Tower Upgrades or an Achievement system.

How do you spend your time outside of work hours? Any crazy hobbies? Meditation? Sports?

I try to spend my time with my family and if I have some time left in the evening I’m happy to play a game myself 😊

And lastly, do you have a message for our readers out there?
Please share your feedback about the game to us. It's very important for us to have your perspective of the game to improve it further. And please keep in mind - especially in war times: It is a game, so stay respectful to each other!
